To wrap up our Black Love Role Models series, I’m sharing several notable couples and more who shined bright at the 91st Annual Academy Awards (aka The Oscars) on Sunday, February 24th.
Mama, you know I love you…
Black Love is not just for the couples, it’s for family and community. Case in point with actors Michael B. Jordan and Academy Award Winner Regina King, both who showed up to this year’s Oscars with their mothers as their dates:
Regina took home the first big award of the night–Best Supporting Actress for her spectacular performance in the film If Beale Street Could Talk, based on the novel by James Baldwin. “Mom, I love you so much. Thank you for teaching me that God is always leaning, always has been leaning in my direction,” Regina shared with her mom, Gloria King, during her acceptance speech.
Black Love couples to watch
This next group of couples are stylish and inspirational together. We love DeVon Franklin and Meagan Good who made the Oscars a date night. They took time before the show to share an inspirational prayer for all those who have big dreams like being on the big stage one day:
Angela Bassett and her husband Courtney B. Vance gave us regal, mature #couplesgoals with their looks together. Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman and his girlfriend Taylor Simone Ledward are noted as the low-key couple that we wouldn’t mind seeing more of.
Lights, Camera, Love!
Lastly we want to acknowledge these Black Love couples with men who make films and their talented and supportive wives. First up is Mahershala Ali, Academy Award Winner for Best Supporting Actor this year for his role in the film Green Book. He thanked his wife Amatus Sami-Karim, an actress and musician, during his speech as well as their daughter. Ali dedicated his award to his grandmother who encouraged him throughout his life with the maxim: “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” He added, “I wouldn’t be here without her; she’s gotten me over the hump every step of the way.”
Also, shout out the young director of the record breaking film Black Panther, Ryan Coogler! Not only has his film won three Oscars for the night, he and his beautiful wife Zinzi Evans made an appearance with their newest production in the works–a baby! The couple are expecting their first child together this year.
Lastly we want to acknowledge the acclaimed director Spike Lee, who won his first Oscar on Sunday night for Best Adapted Screenplay for his film BlackkKlansman. He was joined by his wife of over 25 years, Tonya Lewis Lee. Lewis Lee is an entrepreneur, author and Film/TV producer in her own right, so it’s awesome to see them both create projects that share black stories.
This year’s Academy Awards was definitely one of their most diverse in years. Congratulations to all of the winners and let’s continue to celebrate Black Love in it’s many forms beyond February!
