Welcome to summer, BLISS fam! As the world continues to recover and open up again for us to go outside and engage with others, I see a lot of mottos floating around on the interwebs including “Hot Girl Summer.” Coined by rapper Megan thee Stallion, the term is usually used for a fun and carefree way of life in the summertime, and many use it to refer to being sexually free for the summer season.
Of course, the Christian audience had our foot in the conversation as well with promotions of the counter-cultural “Holy girl summer” or “Saved girl summer,” which had been taken seriously or mocked. Let me tell you, it’s not easy living holy, but it is possible! Even in 2021, I encourage you to not get weary in doing what is right in this life. With everything that we have gone through in the past year and a half, we need to lean more on God and not our own understanding or flesh to get comfort or temporary pleasure.
There are still many benefits to waiting to have sex until marriage, whether you’re sexually inexperienced or looking to renew your walk with God. Sexual purity and abstinence is still relevant today, and a necessary practice for every single believer.
I had a transparent and encouraging conversation with sister in Christ, Natalia Powers of Shift into Success, a platform dedicated to empowering Christian women with resources and topics discussed each month. In May, I was invited with sis in Christ, Russelyn Williams of Intercession for a Generation, on the topic of how sexual purity impacts your ability to shift into success.
One of my favorite topics discussed in this conversation was knowing why you want to have sex at the moment you want it. Is it hormone-related? Is it pressure from society? Is it because it’s what you expect to happen in a dating relationship? We talk about the healing process from sexual experiences, reasons why to wait ’til marriage, and the importance of sexual self-awareness.
