New season, new me: Breaking negative thoughts and speaking

By Lynette Easter

Life is envisioned through the lenses we choose to peer through on a daily basis. It is mostly exemplified in and through our very own perception, which dictates how we view Our Life.  Each of us has our own innate ability in which we inadvertently grab a hold of secretly during trying times. It is mostly during these encounters, we may opt to use our intuition as the basis of a life-altering choice and impacting-decision.

Unfortunately, sometimes we do not consult God; He is not our first and only resort. This is when we find that our mindset is one of our driving forces that can easily tear us apart and lead to our demise during times of adversity.

Even though God allows us to dictate the outcome of our circumstances through the choices we make, we should be cognizant about holding ourselves accountable.

Should we make the appropriate adjustments deemed necessary regarding our change of mindset, we will witness the fruit of our labor.

Around the middle of May, the Holy Spirit convicted me strongly about how my negative words were affecting my life. The scripture that was placed in my spirit was Proverbs 18:21: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.”  I sought guidance from God since this habit has been a practice throughout my lifetime, breaking this vicious cycle has been challenging.

I had no idea until the beginning of this month, after the spirit spoke to me yet again, that this practice existed within my prayer life as well. This caused me to reflect on how candidly I speak about my life. As I write this, “the truth will set/make you free” rings out and coincides with the method of communication and verbiage I utilize. When this type of attribute is embedded and ingrained within you, change is hard! Even with the help of the Holy Spirit.

It is hard because the root of this problem for me stems from my Mindset: “the established set of attitudes held by someone.”

After evaluating my life equation carefully (Mindset + Tongue = outcome), I found that I had become sick and tired of this problem.  So I went before God, surrendered my life to Him and sought His guidance. This caused me to examine and evaluate my habitual pattern in every aspect of my life. I am now choosing to align my mindset, tongue, and life in accordance to the promises of God instead of in accordance to my circumstances. Hebrews 11:1(KJV): “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

All of the aforementioned details remind me that the devil uses various methods when attacking Christians. My tongue and mindset have been two avenues he’s used against me that have had a huge impact on my life. However, I praise God in advance for the victory whilst standing on the promise of God found in Isaiah 54:17.
