This week’s prayer focus is for your future spouse’s purpose to be fulfilled!
This kind of prayer for your future spouse is so important because it’s bigger than you and them. Purpose is something we should be in “search” of instead of a spouse in our single season. Why? Because if you don’t know your purpose, you could connect with someone who doesn’t complement what you were put on this earth to do.
“Until someone has actualized their dream, they’re not going to have time for you. Ladies you want to meet a man who’s already fulfilling his dream or who has already fulfilled a major dream because until then, his focus is going to be on his dream…some of his attention is on you and some is on that business starting or working, and that’s how people start to separate. When people are living their dream, doing what makes them happy, then they have more to give to you.” -Ralph Smart
We have to upgrade our prayers from “Lord, please let them be a believer,” to “Lord, may they be aware of and operating in their purpose.” Sometimes they are not going to have all of the pieces in the puzzle, and maybe you’re in the same situation. Trust that God is going to reveal it all to you in this walk; be aware of the signs. Our pursuit of God is not just for the answers to our questions about a mate, but their purpose, and our purpose, and your purpose—together.
“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10
You want to pray for your future spouse to know and fulfill their purpose because we all can get pretty lost without it. So many of us have voids within that our Father is able to fill with purpose. Until we understand that and go to Him, we will try to compensate for that empty feeling with worldly pleasures, confuse purpose with something else we are gifted to do, etc.
“When I figured out what my purpose was, I had a whole new perspective and lease on life. Who I was 10 to 12 years ago is completely different from who I am today. I really think with not knowing your purpose, you can have the trappings of what makes you happy, but can still be miserable on the inside,” shared Adeea Rogers in my book: Journey to 30: A Single Woman’s Guide to Living Unapologettically Without Deadlines.
As a future spouse, your role is to be encouraging and supportive of your spouse’s purpose and God’s call on their life. It will be vital then and it is vital right now. Don’t neglect your own purpose either, for there are people attached to what you were created to do.
You have the responsibility to cover them in prayer and be their go-to partner who will remind them of their why when they feel like giving up or backing away.
How exciting is that? Your selfless prayers for your future spouse are going to impact the lives of many!!! God is so amazing how He fashioned us in the Body of Christ with certain functions that all work together (1 Corinthians 12). Prayerfully we will choose mates that fit God’s will for our personal lives and purposes.
Here are some scriptures to consider when you pray for your future spouse in the area of purpose:
- Pray that they will seek the Lord and be obedient regarding their purpose and calling
(Philppians 3:14) - Pray that the Lord’s will for their lives be fulfilled before they leave Earth (1 John 2:17)
- Pray that they be encouraged in this season wherever they are in their purpose walk
(Philippians 1:9-11) - Pray for the Lord for the understanding to support your spouse’s purpose and them for yours (Philippians 2:2-11)
- Pray that their focus is on purpose and less attention is given to distractions (Proverbs 4:25)
