Pray for Bae: Pray to be the spouse they need

This week we are focusing on you with the perspective of what your future spouse would need.

This may be one of the most selfless prayers you can make because often times if we’re honest we pray for things to work out in our favor. Just a reminder: marriage requires you to ditch the selfish mindset and behaviors. It’s not going to be overnight, but you can practice being selfless everyday and definitely as you pray for your future spouse.

Are you going into this season thinking about what they can do for you, or more on what you can do for them?

If you’re unsure of where to start on these types of prayers, consider asking: What has God called them to? How can you best express love, trust, respect and honor to them? An additional read for the ladies comes from this post from Married & Young about God sending you a man who may not be like Boaz, but perhaps like Moses, Abraham or Jonah.

This is a selfless prayer for your spouse because it’s opening up yourself to get wisdom on how to be the best husband or wife to your future spouse. You will not be perfect, but you can pray for maturity to understand your role as a spouse and partner in your future marriage.

Consider your grace gifts and the gifts of the Spirit that the Lord is bringing out of you. How are you applying them in your relationships today and how could they play out in the future? For instance, I love encouraging people; it’s one of my grace gifts. I want to be the kind of wife that encourages my husband to pursue his visions and goals, keeping him lifted when he’s feeling inadequate, giving him support when he’s too hard on himself. That’s just an example but consider what you personally have to bring to the table—how will you make your spouse’s life better?

Also in season of preparation for marriage, consider where you’re being challenged a lot. Is it on your patience? Work ethic? Habits? Thoughtfulness? God is at work on our behalf and often times that includes Him working on us too day by day. Don’t say in one breath that you’re ready for courtship and then don’t want to enter the process to get there. It won’t be easy but it will be worth it because God is bringing out the best in you through these moments. What you’ve gone through you can be grateful for by being a gentler, wiser and more understanding spouse in the future.

Here are some additional scriptures to add to your prayers this week as you cover your future spouse:

  • Pray that you will bring peace to your spouse and not chaos.
  • (Colossians 3:14-15)
  • Pray that your future spouse will be able to trust you in your relationship. (Proverbs 31:11-12)
  • Pray that you both will be selfless in serving one another in love.
    (Galatians 5:13)
  • Pray that you’ll be quicker to forgive and cover than hold your spouse to their faults. (Colossians 3:13)
  • Pray that you become content and walk in your wholeness before the Lord sends your spouse. (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24)

Thank you all for joining us this month for the Pray for Bae series! There are so many other prayers that can be said for our future mates, but these were the ones God placed on my heart to discuss. What else would you pray for regarding your spouse? Please share in the comments below!

Great series! I would also pray about their generational curses and unhealed areas of their hearts.
