Is 2023 the year of pop out and find out? Black women celebs are keeping things coy when sharing the love or loves of their lives. Nowadays, with the general public oversharing on social media apps, couples building their brands on the Internet, and the overall stress that comes with being “public” with your love life can be distracting to anyone, let alone a public figure.
I appreciate that more and more women, famous and civilian, are practicing the art of privacy. It’s not a new concept, as there were plenty of instances in the Bible when it was necessary to be private (i.e. Joseph, Abraham, Esther, Ruth and Boaz, etc.). I’m reading Dephne Madyara’s book, “The Art of Being Private: Building in Silence,” and there are plenty of benefits to being private about many aspects of your life, including your relationship. She wrote, “The art of being private expresses itself through the keeping of your inner peace as you focus on your mission, goals, and vision.”
Perhaps you’re like one or a few of the following celebrity women who have announced love in different ways, from traditional to flat-out surprise. Which one are you? Try taking this quiz below. If you got mostly A’s, you’re gonna Stop the Presses!
In terms of how you show up online, you like to post, but you save the big news for when you’ve done it or are almost there, much to our surprise! Some examples include Keshia Knight Pulliam, who announced a new baby in December 2022 with her husband, Brad James, during a talk show interview. One cannot forget actress Niecy Nash-Betts who shocked the Internet when she married her partner and now shares their love often on social media.
If you got mostly B’s, you’re not hiding too much, just enough.
You like to share your life on social media to the point that some people may guess what you have coming up next. But you rather formally announce your next move when you’re good and ready. See Keke Palmer—who announced a baby on her own terms after speculation for months in her social media posts. Actress Teyonah Parris—excitedly announced her baby on the way with her husband when she was showing, but she’s been flaunting her baby bump ever since!
If you got mostly C’s, you prefer to post with a purpose.
A few public figures come to mind in this category like Issa Rae who popped up married after a semi-long engagement, and entrepreneur Koereyelle who had a wedding a whole year after getting married privately to her husband. Actress Gabourey Sidibe also got married and announced it a year later and continued posting as usual. They all show their spouses a little bit, but that’s not the focus of their content. Only the C types will understand!
If you got mostly D’s, you’re low-key, but when you show out, everyone is happy for you!
Similar to actresses Danielle Brooks and Anika Noni Rose, you rather post that you’re off the market when the ink dries on that marriage license. Both ladies shared that they were officially married with photos from the weddings. Privacy Boss moves for sure! Another example is Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o who announced her man who she’d been with for some time over a trending social media post recently, which garnered over 1 million likes. Okay, sis!
If you got mostly E’s you’re the mysterious one.
Are you dating? Are you married? The world will have to wait in anticipation. Much like celebrities such as Lori Harvey, Quinta Brunson, and Kerry Washinton, you share very few details about your love life. We may know that there’s someone in the picture, but you’re mum about a lot of information. You’re strategic about how you move online, and you prefer to protect your peace by only speaking about what you want to speak about and when you’re ready.
