Every year I’m always finding ways to defend Valentine’s Day. I personally love love, so a day celebrating sharing love is what I’m here for, whether it’s commercialized or not. Listen, not every person is into the tacky gifts, roses, and grand gestures…
Sorry, Jamie.
So if you happen to date or are in a relationship with someone who could care less about the Valentine’s Day holiday, there are still ways you can do a little something for them that they’ll love throughout the year and because it’s from you.
Travel deals
Southwest Airlines is having a flight sale now until February 15th. My flight bae Southwest is always coming up with surprises including sales, so if it’s in your budget, pick a spot your boo has always wanted to visit and pay for their flight.
Gift according to their love language
What’s your mate’s love language? Out of the five types of love languages (touch, quality time, acts of service, gifts, words of affirmation), you can always do something thoughtful for your loved one on Valentine’s Day or any day for that matter. Knowing how they love is key because while they may not want cheesy gifts, it’s because they really want an affirming word of encouragement or just some time with you, not holiday stress attached.
Consistent date nights
Tamera Mowry-Housley shared on her show “The Real” that though she loves the holiday, she and her husband go the extra mile and have date nights every week. If this is something you all haven’t been doing, create a habit of having consistent dates. They don’t always have to be out at expensive restaurants or events. Get creative and find ways to enjoy time with your partner without having to spend a lot of money. It’s about keeping the communication open and alive in the relationship, not how to top the last date.
Food
Food is always a good choice for everyone! Haven’t cooked for your partner in a while? Make them lunch for work or treat them to a homemade brunch over the weekend.
A paid bill
At 31, a lovely gesture or gift is a paid bill! “Aww babe, you shouldn’t have, but now that you did, I can move that money towards another debt or save it.” Event if it’s a small amount, it’s a load off of their shoulders.
Tickets to see Black Panther
This has been the movie to see for months now. If you haven’t already, get tickets to see Black Panther in theaters this weekend or sometime this month. You can make the deal sweeter by covering snacks too, because this film is going to be 2+ power-packed hours!
Side note: Make sure you’re dating someone who acknowledges you and that you’re not in a one-sided relationship. Celebrating love day may not be their thing, but make sure they are there for you every day. Whatever you plan to do this Valentine’s Day, enjoy life and know that you are loved!
